Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s different this year at St. George Skates™?

First, we decided to align St. George Skates with a charity, which is the Bermuda Diabetes Association, whose slogan to “get moving” and to exercise to combat diabetes, is in line with what St. George provides the community. On our Grand Opening Weekend, November 18 and 19, each ticket purchase will result in a $5/person donation from Planning Factory Bermuda to BDA.

Planning Factory Bermuda recognized the need for a Community Tent, to be used for Birthday Parties and other gatherings, We also added the following:

  • An expanded rink that allows up to (75) on the rink at any one time.
  • Friday Golden Hour from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., when anyone 55+ can skate for $15 or just come to enjoy our Community Tent with friends.
  • Friday night Theme Nights (check PTIX.com) for list of themes, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday nights with DJ from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • “Selfies with Santa” on December 9, 16 and 12, from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • New Year’s Eve Party from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with hats and horns for those under (18) years of age.
Q: Is it real ice? How will you keep it frozen in Bermuda?

No, the material is man-made synthetic ice. It is exactly the same ice rink used by professional hockey skaters when they train indoors, so we have no worries about keeping real ice cold!

Q: How can I book the Community Tent for a Birthday Party?

There are two ways:

  1. Book the rink for an exclusive hour for $1,500, which includes the tent and tables and chairs for up to (50).  You may choose the hour before or after the hour of skating, for a two-hour personal experience.
  2. Purchase (10) tickets or more to skate the hour of your choice and book the tent with tables and chairs for up to (50) for $500.
  • Both options available for booking through PTIX.bm;
  • You are invited to bring your own food and beverage, but cleanup is required;
  • Hot dogs are available on site by Hot Dog Delight and drinks by Ashley’s Lemonade; please contact them directly for your birthday needs, if desired.
Q: Is it St. George’s Skates or St. George Skates™? Why not St. George’s?

While we know everyone refers to the town as St. George’s, the Corporation of St. George was a part of the naming decision.  In keeping the actual name of the Town of St. George, it was agreed that the title would be in the singular.

Q: Why have it in Somers Garden rather than someplace more visible?

Somers Garden was picked in part because of its natural beauty, but also because of its cosy and protected environment. With a wall surrounding it, the gardens are shielded from some of the elements like wind and rain. Located after Somer’s Supermarket on York Street, in order to find the garden, you make the first left immediately after the grocers on Government Hill Road. Walk up that street and make the first right onto Blockade Alley. Turn right again and take the stairs to Somers Garden. It’s about two minutes by foot from the main road.

Q: What if someone is injured on the skate rink?

Although PFB is hoping that normal safety measures and precautions are followed by people on the rink, St. John’s Ambulance Service will be on site as an EMT service throughout the event. This will serve as a precaution in the event of any unexpected falls or injuries on the ice. In addition to that, organisers are requiring children aged 12 and under to always be accompanied by an adult.

Q: Who can attend this event and will skate rentals be available?

Everyone and anyone. Skates from Children’s size 8/9, all the way up to Men’s 13 will be offered. In addition, if anyone has skates of their own they are welcome to bring those to the rink in order to test their skills on the ice or learn to skate.

Q: Will there be refreshments to purchase?

There will be a few vendors in the garden providing light snacks and drinks and the restaurants in the area will be open for a more substantial lunch or dinner.

Q: How do we register and pay to participate?

PFB will launch sales through PTIX for online registration for wristbands available before the end of October. Guests will be provided with a coloured wrist band, designating a different colour each hour for each day, and the opportunity to skate for up to an hour, including transition time on and off the rink, for $20 per person. The rink can accommodate up to 50 people per hour.

Q: I heard there may be a discount coupon available . . . How do I get that?
There will be a special offer for RUBiS Rewards members which will save them up to 20% off a St. George Skates™ ticket package. Any key tag holder who purchase $40 or more in fuel shall receive one Rewards coupon per singular $40 transaction which entitles the member to save $5 per St. George Skates™ ticket package up to a maximum of 2 tickets.

This offer will be available during November 21 to January 15, subject to ticket availability.

Q: Can I book out the skating rink for a private or corporate event?

Yes. There are select nights where companies are able to reserve the rink for their staff and their families. There has been quite a bit of interest already from corporations who see this is a great new experience for their staff and a practical way to get people into the Holiday spirit, so book early to avoid disappointment. To book a private night, contact [email protected].

Q: What will be the benefit to Bermuda?

The East End has a lot going on during the Holiday Season. St. George Skates™ ties in well with those seasonal events as it is a themed winter experience for the whole family to enjoy. Residents will be able to take their children to the skating rink to enjoy the festivities, while tourists and visitors can enjoy a small glimpse of a good old-fashioned “frosty Christmas” during the time on our shores.

Q: How long with St. George Skates be open this season?

SGS will open with a fundraiser for the Bermuda Diabetes Association on November 18 and 19, and run through the month of December and into January, open weekends only, until the end of the month; please go to PTIX.com to see all dates and times available to skate.

Q: Can we bring our own skating gear?

YES- you may bring helmets and knee or elbow pads

Q: Where can you park?

A: Parking is available at the various public lots within St George’s.

Q: Lastly who exactly will be operating the rink?

A team of local managers, along with PFB staff and some volunteers, have been assigned to oversee the management of the rink.
